What do you like the most about SS?
How simple it is to use and is extremely effective.
What improvements would you suggest?
If you could get it to separate each part of a song, so that one could listen to it and save it to file would be awesome!
Comments:
One major use for me, is to break down the vocal parts! I am responsible for leading worship in our church and it has become a vital and necessary tool in my learning new songs. I love it! It is truly a blessing. I agree that is a must have tool. I not only use it for my guitar playing but it is an awesome tool for breaking down the vocals! It has cut my time learnig the melody of any song in half and then some.

I can't believe how easy and fun it is to use
Outstanding little application! I have been waiting for this to come to the Mac, and now that I have it I can't believe how easy and fun it is to use. Within about 10 minutes of playing with it, I found previously unheard nuances in a couple of riffs I had been trying to learn. I'm telling every musician I know to buy this. . . the price is right, and it literally Rocks!
Bill Hilson
Oh....can I get a hell yes.
Installed and playing w/ it now.  Again...that zoom feature is so cool.  You guys make a great product and the fact that you could have charged me for mac version, but DIDN'T....puts you all squarely in the cool column.
I will recommend Song Surgeon to anybody that will listen with the hopes that it will come back to you 5 fold.
Cheers,
Chris Kahle
If only I'd had this when I was first learning guitar!
It's everything I've imagined for more years than I can count!  The algorithms that must have been developed to play a song or snippet at virtually any speed in the same key simply boggle the mind!  Johnny Winter, Terry Kath, John McLaughlin, Django Reinhardt, & Jimi, lookout!  (If only I'd had this when I was first learning guitar!)

Thanks a lot!  Your work is much appreciated!

I was getting out of my league till SS came into my life
SS is a very useful tool to my guitar playing. At 58 years old, I am a late starter, having taken up electric guitar a couple of years ago. Although I've had an acoustic on and off since I was 15, I never ever got past playing 3 or 4 chords.
So at the age of 56 I decided to give it some serious commitment, practising an hour a day, most days of the week. I always wanted to play blues guitar and so bought a manual with CD. I got up to the middle of the book then felt I was getting out of my league till SS came into my life. The tutorial CD I use has some great lessons to play along with, but each clip plays at full speed so I was getting lost off when the lessons became progressively more difficult. The SS facility to slow down the practice clips on the CD has enabled me to get over this obstacle.

Cheers
Mike
The software alone is awesome
I just bought the Song Surgeon download over the weekend...  I wish I had done this sooner...  the software alone is awesome... but when used with guitar tab, it takes all the mystery out of lifting riffs...  a real time saver...  just a matter of getting your fingers to move fast enough...

THANKS!

I love it and recommend it to anyone who loves to play
This product has helped me many times since purchasing it.  I enjoy learning songs from my past to keep my fingers nimble and to bring me back to my days in a band.  I have used this for lead and rhythm guitar, both electric and acoustic, keyboard and piano as well as bass guitar.  Can't think of any improvements.  I love it and recommend it to anyone who loves to play.  Also, the help I received when I had to change computers and transfer this purchase was quick and professional.
Dave
I HATE READING INSTRUCTIONS and don't need to with Song Surgeon
I really like it.  I play keyboard and would like to have a setting that makes the keyboard parts stand out more.  Or advise on how to set the EQ to be able to hear the keyboard parts better.  I've used the Tascam bass trainer and the sound is not as good.  Song Surgeon is also easier to control from my computer.  The settings are simple.  I HATE READING INSTRUCTIONS and don't need to with Song Surgeon
Song Surgeon is fabulous
Song Surgeon is fabulous.  Just wish it would have been available in the 60s,70s and 80s when i spent thousands of hours trying my best to play cover leads note for note.  Great Product. No excuses for the guys now.  It is right here to learn.

Song Surgeon has added a whole new dimension to my guitar playing
Since I purchased Song Surgeon a couple of weeks ago, I have learned Layla Unplugged note for note.  I am very pleased with the slowdown capability in conjuction with the loop function. These two fetures are fabulous for learning a song as it was originally played.  Song Surgeon has added a whole new dimension to my guitar playing.  I only wish I had something like this 20 years ago. Thanks for a great product.  The only drawback is it's keeping me up late at night!

I own a music studio where I teach singers, pianists and violinists
I love the program and I use it often. I own a music studio where I teach singers, pianists and violinists. I use the program mostly to adjust tempi and key for karaoke tracks for my singers. It's absolutely wonderful! Now, I can customize the karaoke to suit my students' needs. The program is also very easy to use.
Thanks,

What a breakthrough in technology
I'm from the generation that used a 45 RPM record to learn fills, chords, leads, etc. (What a pain that was) I have played guitar and keyboard for many years and if this product had been around in the 70"s, my learning time would have been cut drastically from hours to minutes. This is a great package for anybody who yearns to learn to play licks and chords that are heard on the radio or CD's. If the song playing isn't in the key that you want, simply move the pitch up or down to where it is more comfortable for you. If you can't grasp the scales/leads being played at song speed, move the speed down to where it is manageable without losing pitch. For example; I was recording a Kenny G. song and heard a scale that sounded familiar. When I slowed the recording, I found that it was a Locrian scale. So... that is how that mode is used. What a breakthrough in technology. Congratulations Guys. This package works well for me and performs as advertised.

As a professional musician...
As a professional musician, I find it a very useful tool not only for figuring out chords and melody lines but as a play-along tool for rehearsing stuff up to the required speed. I have not bought the new release because, as a customer who has already bought and paid for release 1, I think that, although the new features are good, paying an additional 60 dollars or so is not justified.
Thanks for a great product.

I recommend it to all my students
I am a registrated customer since the very beginning of SS-version 1.
I've already have purchased Song Surgeon version 2 since its release and I am very pleased with the program. I am a guitar teacher and I use it every day.  I recommend it to all my students.
Kind regards,
Hugo Ruys
It's almost miraculously easy to use
SS has already done us well--we led a sing-along for old folks yesterday afternoon using pre-recorded accompaniments that were all too high for them.  SS got everything down to a reasonable pitch, and sped up one that was draggy.
I look forward to learning more, but it's almost miraculously easy to use, and the brief training videos you've made got me oriented and on my way in a hurry.
Best wishes,
Don Chatfield
I teach line dancing
I teach line dancing, and it is great to be able to use the same song to the dance and just slow it down, than to look for other slower music, before my students are ready to learn to the original song that the dance is choreographed to.

It's simple, effective and you support has been excellent
Jim, I'm a professional musician. I play 60 or so times a year. I use the product to pick out the more complicated leads from cover material so we can nail the songs exact. It's simple, effective and you support has been excellent. With the online training in ten minutes your flying. I have used the Tascam and to be honest it just requires too much time to learn and is cumbersome handling mp3's ( I brought it back). We even use the product in our practise sessions. Today's learning environment is driven by the laptop. All of my music is in mp3 format all my learning material is accessed and stored through my computer. You product is the right choice and priced way below the competition. I recommend it as the one tool for beginners that will impact learning more than any other, after basic technical skills have been developed.

I play bass...
I play bass and use Song Surgeon to pick up bass parts of songs.  I find it very useful, especially the 'loop' part.

The ability to view and save a loop with SS is indispensable
You have a great product. I use it a lot to learn songs. The ability to view and save a loop with SS is indispensable. I've used a TASCAM Guitar Trainer CD version which is okay, but I haven't touched it since purchasing Song Surgeon. I would like to see the types of files expanded.

A fantastic tool for transposing songs
This product is a fantastic tool for transposing songs into different keys, and slowing down guitar parts to be able to figure them out!  I love it!

I can tell that you stand behind your product
I want to personally thank you for having a great and most fantastic software program out there for us guitarist. If you're a true guitarist, inside & out, the only way to play a lick or an entire song is the right and correct way or it will never sit right with you. I also want to thank you for the freebies, they are always great. I work for Southwest Airlines, the #1 airline to work for in this world, especially at this time and age. We pride ourselves in our "customer service", this is what we sell. We go up and beyond in order to create loyalty among our customers. Today you have gained my loyalty. First, by replying and genuinely meaning what you said in your email. It's a simple reply, but I can tell that you stand behind your product and you believe in it as well, that's huge because it sounds like you're going to be around for a while (that's a joke & I'm laughing at the same time). And the second thing was you sent me backing tracks, Guitar Fretware Program and Guitar Lead 6-Pak Course.
Let me tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to show and tell all my guitar head friends about this program. Thank you for everything, I most certainly appreciate it all. Enjoy the upcoming weekend.
Best Regards,

I am usually intimidated with software...
You guy's are right.. I don't know what I was doing with out it. It's a snap. I am usually intimidated with software.. of any kind!! I don't think I have even used Song Surgeon to all of it's potential, but I get the most out of it for just learning parts.
I do have the Tascam.. no comparison.. thought maybe you were going to offer a huge garage sale so I could get rid of it. ;^> It's a paper weight now.. I did use it and it was great. Probably why I waited to get your product?!! It's just not practical any more. Song Surgeon slows down MORE.. man, that made the difference right there. Just the few extra beats. I was pretty frustrated before.

O.k. guy's and gals.. thank you!!!
Steve
Yours has a very well thought out user interface
Yes I took a look at the demo and it is indeed a useful program. I do have a couple of programs that do similar things but yours has a very well thought out user interface, the best that I've seen. I've been hoping to find a pitch change program that can change keys a half step at a time instead of being infinitely variable.
I've been out of the music business for about 30 years and just dabble in it now. If I were serious I would buy your program in a heartbeat. As it is I will recommend it to anyone who I think would benefit. Thank you also for the several tutorials. Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Gary O'Donald
What I like about SS is the reduced speed
What I like about SS is the reduced speed, to practice playing along with a song. Of course you can do this with Windows Media Player, but combined with the possibility to play a fragment of a song in a loop it's really cool! Very good if you want to figure out what they're actually playing...
To be improved: the quality of the reduced sound - you hear a kind of clicks that can be pretty annoying (although I'm amazed that this actually works!)
I could imagine that you introduce another slider to fine tune the reduced speed playback.

I play the guitar.

I have recommended SS to my guitar teacher
I am a beginning guitar player (started Labor Day-2008).  I purchased Song Surgeon to help me with the riffs in "Ohio" by Neil Young.  Although there was sound degredation when slowing the tempo, it was more than offset by the ability to hear what the musicians were playing.  If there is way to lessen this, that would be a huge improvement.
I like the looping.  And the "Save As" function.  In order to work on the separate sections, I would save them as Solo 1, Solo 2, etc. and then could work on them as needed.  I did find that if you save something at a reduced speed, when you re-enter that file the reduced speed is now the 100% speed.  I would, therefore, save solos at 100% and reduce them as I practiced.  I don't think you should change the way it works, you might just want to let the users know that this is how it should be done.

I have recommended SS to my guitar teacher (who I think also bought a copy).  I also recommended it to other beginning students that I have met.  I feel the product is well worth the price.  I did look at Tascam but felt having the tool in a portable player was not worth the price they were charging.
William
Well worth the money.
I really enjoy using song surgeon.  So often when you practice a new song, instead of playing the song slowly, you want to speed up and play the song at the right tempo.  Playing along with song surgeon has helped me play at a consistant tempo (as opposed to using the metronome)...therefore you can work on techniques and playing the song cleanly.
Thanks and I am glad I purchased the software.  Well worth the money.

It is simple and intuative to use
Song Surgeon is truly a very good program to use in order to mechanically tear a song apart to learn how it is played.  It is simple and intuitive to use.  I have been able to learn both rythem and lead sections of my favorite songs using SS. I have endorsed and recommended the program to my other guitar playing friends.

I use Song Surgeon practically every day
I use Song Surgeon practically every day, and love how it works for me.  One suggestion I would have to improve it would be for the program to "remember", say, the last 10 songs I pulled up to work on.  Since I work on the same song for several days, this feature would save me a lot of searching time. Thanks for a great product.

Your program works just as well if not BETTER
Love the program, I play guitar 1 BC Rich in dropped C tuning, also have a Washburn in standard tuning, I play a variety of styles, anything from Eric Clapton to Slipknot + some classical music(ala Randy Rhodes), I was trying to figure out some Iron Maiden for awhile, once I used the program i learned it in 1 day! Very COOL only thing i can think off is wishing you could turn down drums riffs other than that LOVE IT! EQ is great saving & looping is great, I've told a few people what a great asset this is, some have taken lessons & spent 100's of $ dollars, when your program works just as well if not BETTER!

In my opinion a much better value than GT (guitar trainer)
I own and have used the Tascam Guitar Trainer. Personally I much prefer Song Surgeon, for at least two reasons. First I get most of my tunes through i Tunes which means I download them and can then load them directly into SS. With Guitar Trainer I have to burn a disc and even then it doesn't work because Guitar Trainer will only read original discs not burned CD's. Secondly SS is so easy to use compared to GT.

Great learning tool! In my opinion a much better value than GT.

I like Song Surgeon Very much.
I like Song Surgeon very much. I use it to slow down and analyze (primarily) jazz solos. I found the repeat easy to use after a quick read of the 'help' documentation. The audio quality of the program is very good.

It's Brilliant
It's great and does exactly as it say on the tin. I have found the ability to slow the track down has improved my playing and accuracy. It's brilliant.

However I have started to innovate and learn even faster by using song surgeon to create mp3 clips of a section of music I am trying to learn. Each clip is slightly faster, that is, I might record the same clip at 60, 65,70,75,80,85,95 percent of tempo. Then I burn these to a player which I then use with my amp to jam along to. I find this a fantastic method to work up to full speed.

It's really helping me...
I have been learning accoustic guitar for a while now as a hobby, I am 59 years old and learning at my pace. When I discovered Song Surgeon, I said to myself why not give it a try, well I have no regret, it is really helping me. I hope the upgraded version will be able to reduce de vocal so I would be able to concentrate on the instruments. Keep up the good work

I use Song Surgeon for teaching
I use Song Surgeon for teaching. I was showing the students how to transpose at the keyboard and on guitar. I let them listen to the original song and then changed the pitch. They understood right away and now look at studying scales in a different perspective. When we reached a rhythm difficulty I used Song Surgeon to slow it down until they got the proper rhythm. This is an excellent teaching tool.

Song Surgeon to create a ring tone
I've just recently purchased a new phone, and unlike my previous one I had not put any real songs on it as my ringtone as the files were too large. I always wanted Santana's Black Magic Women as my ringtone, although it was a particular guitar riff that I wanted. So using song surgeon I uploaded the song file from my Santana CD and using SS I cropped that particular riff and saved it as a new file. Afterwards I connected my phone and transferred the SS cut file onto it and set it as my ringtone. Now I have a cool ringtone that goes for just the right length and is the right size to not take up too much space on my phone.

I am a pro country guitarist living in France and working throughout Europe. Song Surgeon is quite simply fantastic. I use it all the time when I am practicing alone or with other musicians.

I use it to 'steal' the licks of the Nashville greats like Brent Mason.
I use it to rehearse a repertoire for stage use.
I use it to change keys, or tempo, if a song is not in the key that a singer wants.
The fact that one can slow down/speed up is invaluable.

I love it, love it, love it.
I like being able to slow down a song enough to be able to play along with it, and therefore to really learn it. It also provides almost a jam-like session and one is able to get in a break and back-up a break.

I really can't think of a thing to improve it's operation. Overall, it is a tremendous product. I am sold on it, and have shown all my friends.

Instrument(s) you are using SS with: Banjo....bluegrass and bluegrass gospel genre On a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the highest) how would you rate SS? A 12. It is unlike anything else out there.

Regarding a novel use for Song Surgeon. I have been able to slow a song down for learning purpose, cut out and record the breaks for various instruments, and send them by email to the members of our group by email in mp3 format. We are then all learning the same piece and it helps up put it together.

Song Surgeon has done exactly what I expected
I have used only guitar so far with song surgeon, probably will use base and drums later. Song Surgeon has done exactly what i expected so far. I am pleased with the purchase. The only problem i have had is with the instructional video portion. In the File Formats section it stopped playing at timer 4:59, other than that no problem.

Thanks for a helpful program.

Song Surgeon has become his "secret" weapon
I purchased Song Surgeon as a gift for my husband. He plays electric and acoustic guitar. Bruce (husband) and his band from early high school days have reunited & are "doing it again" with their Santana cover band. 35 years is a long, long time ago...the memory bank has been overdrawn, and the old songs don't come as easily as they did when he was a teen. Song Surgeon has become his "secret" weapon, and makes it look as though he's spent far more time on his practising than he has. Great product!!!! (Just don't tell the rest of the band!!!!!!)

I agree that it is a phenomenal, must-have product
I did buy it three weeks ago and I agree that it is a phenomenal, must-have product. I didn't realize how valuable it would be prior to purchasing it. I am a software developer and I am very impressed with the simplicity and user-friendliness of the interface, the elegance of the functionality in the application, and the design and accuracy of the graphical elements. Unlike others I've seen, it is very professional and does what you say it will do very well - and it is simple to use, with a very minimal learning curve.

Song Surgeon is a program that I have long awaited
I just want to let you know that Song Surgeon is a program that I have long awaited- not only for myself, but also for my guitar students. As a guitar teacher, I have often had to figure out songs that my students want to learn by listening to a CD they bring me. After trying Song Surgeon and seeing how simple it is to use, I know it will make my job a lot faster and easier. Song Surgeon will also give my students a great tool they can use to practice along with at home. Thanks for creating a software program that is sure to benefit musicians everywhere, whatever their skill level or instrument of choice might be.

Song Surgeon is a necessary tool for musicians
Song Surgeon is a necessary tool for musicians of all experience levels. Students and teachers alike will find everything they need to learn from the masters. The tempo adjustment feature is critical for drummers transcribing complex drum parts. Slowing down the tempo will actually speed up the learning process and allow more time behind the drumkit for practice.

I learn the music very quickly being able to hear it slow it down and practice.
I just wanted to say that I enjoy your product quite a bit. I was wondering if you were planning on making anymore volumes? I would really like to get some more with some newer content, or maybe some Metallica solos broken apart too. The program has worked great for me and is very cost effective. ...the slow half speed option is very useful
I really am impressed with this set of lessons. The sound is incredible, even on my computer speakers. Also, the slow half speed option is very useful. I would actually like to order the remaining sets of leads that I should have ordered the first time.

The biggest advantage...for me is the half speed feature
What a great course! As someone who has been playing for several years without ever taking a lesson, I really learned a lot from your course. I especially enjoyed the Guitar Leads Course. The biggest advantage of this play along course for me is the half speed feature. By being able to slow the pace, you actually decrease the learning time! I am looking forward to Volume 2. Thanks a 1,000,000!

...slowing down to half speed is great.
I have just started the course and I am finding it really good. The riffs and leads shown make it really easy to learn the rest of the song. Especially slowing down to half speed is great. The sales service was fantastic and left me very impressed. Especially when there was a problem with the disc production, the problem was rectified immediately. Can't wait for volume 5 and hopefully beyond.

Having the slow and regular versions ...is the real jewel of the program
I found that having the slow and regular versions of the transcriptions/ recordings to be the real jewel of the program. There is no way I would have been able to learn and play Black Magic Women if I had only the regular speed recording to work from. Even the slow version of some material is difficult but very workable. Bottom line, money very well spent.

..half speed was incredibly useful
I have tried the course, and I like it very much. Being able to slow the music to half speed is extremely helpful. I was playing some of the tunes during my first session. Again, half speed was incredibly useful, with "I Know a Little", since there's so much going on in that tune, and it's played fast. I would like to see more classic blues songs, but that's just a personal thing. Thanks for listening.

If you want to get it right, get Song Surgeon…
Fifty years ago we didn’t have things like Song Surgeon… and I can remember wearing out 45 RPM records, playing them over and over again trying squeeze out that last bit of a note on some killer riff…. If you really want to get it right, get Song Surgeon.  You can play it over and over again until you get it down. Working at half speed helps you get it right, so you don’t have to waste time unlearning costly mistakes.
